Recap of Last Week

Last week we were so busy, we forgot to share our happenings!  Here are some recaps...

Math:  Measuring and more measuring!  We have now learned how to measure in the metric and customary systems as well as estimate objects' lengths.  Our most recent focus has been comparing lengths of different objects.  We will be wrapping up measurement with line plots.

Fundations:  Unit 2 focused on adding bonus letters (f, l, s) to words and also glued sounds.  The sounds we practiced were: ank, ink, onk, unk, ang, ing, ong, ung.  Please look for these patterns in your child's work.

Reading:  Guided reading is in full gear!  Groups meet 2-3 times per week and will be receiving homework in upcoming weeks.  Each child has a reading baggie that contains a notebook and his/her guided reading book.  You may see this baggie come home a couple times a week.  Students do have the option of completing the work in the classroom.
We also have reader's workshop up and running smoothly!  Students are to complete the W.O.R.L.D. activities by Friday.  Each day we have three 15-minute stations.  They include being a....
writer, observer, reader, listener, detective of words.

Writing:  Small moment writing, or known as personal narratives, will continue to be our focus for the remainder of the quarter.  We have been learning and practicing how to plan our writing with a writing buddy.  This has helped us to create narratives that are in order and have engaging details.

Social Studies:  We wrapped up our careers unit last week and look forward to Career Day in October!  Some of the key words of the unit were: needs, wants, goods, services, producers, and consumers.  We learned how important careers are to the community and how we depend on them.  To conclude the unit, we worked with a partner to research one career and then shared with the class.
